Egg Design Craft - a Faberge inspired art, decorating goose, rhea, and ostrich eggs using miniature models and  figurine sculptures.

Egg Art - decorated eggs - there are endless designs used in this craft and many of today's designers have been inspired by the  Russian Jeweler Carl Faberge. However the use of real egg shells, (including goose, rhea and ostrich) has evolved, and most of today's offerings in the art sense undoubtedly stem from the output of several noted American egg artists. There are several publications detailing their work. Libraries are an excellent source for obtaining an introduction into the art and craft of decorating eggs.

Artists throughout the ages have found The Three Graces an appealing and captivating subject. They were the beautiful sister goddesses who attended Venus the goddess of love. They were an ancient symbol of liberality. It was Aglaia. a representation of splendour who was the sister who gave away: Euphorosyne who represented jollity, was the sister who received: and Thalia identified with abundance, was she who gave back.

Their prominence in the world of art is somewhat surprising. They were depicted in sculpture and vase paintings by the ancient Greeks, in Roman wall paintings at Pompeii, in Botticelli's allegorical painting known as Springtime, and in the statue which Antonio Cavona carved in marble c1814. Cavona was the foremost Neoclassical sculptor in Europe and this work is displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

This miniature version sculpted by D'Silva c2005 and is inspired by Canova's great work.

At only 3,1/2 inches high it is just right for the interior of a Rhea Egg. No painting is required as it is supplied in a matt white, simulated alabaster resin.

Egg Craft - design a decoupage egg shell broach

Select a suitable broach blank Cut an oval from the "waist" portion of a goose egg section to fit the blank Reinforce the back of the shell with 2 coats of paper tissue stuck with wood glue *1* Apply a decoupage paper picture or silk print.*2*

Decoupage Egg instructions.

*1*. Smear the inside of the shell with the glue using your finger. Tear up1/2 inch squares of household tissue paper (torn and ragged rather than cut so the squares can overlap a little) -cover the oval and let dry for a bit, then repeat the same process and leave to dry 24hrs. Trim of the edges of excess paper and sand this edge with a med sandpaper. The shell is ready to apply a decal or a print.

*2*. Which ever method is used make sure the completed work is smooth and without any creases or surface defects. For a decoupage method I like to buff this part of the work with a handle of a spoon. Once the print has been applied, at this stage any additional colours can be added to the edges of the print or background with smudged chalks ,watercolours or acrylics. Now seal this with any of the available decoupage mediums. The first coat I apply is brushed on very  thinly and quickly. Five more coats are the applied using my finger. The work will become "foggy" as each coat is applied leave this and it will eventually become crystal clear. After all the coats are completely dry and clear, begin to sand wet and dry - don't over do the wet  however - check the surface is completely smooth and also that there are no dark flecks from the wet and dry paper. Let the work dry as it will have again gone foggy. At this point I like to set the work on a radiator at a low heat or an airing cupboard to speed things up a bit. When dry, spray with a clear acrylic car spay, two or more coats to build up the surface finish. You can now give a coat of paint to the back of the shell. When dry glue the shell into the brooch back using Devcon or similar product. Four or more ovals can be cut from one goose egg-not bad value.

All of our miniatures are produced in white resin to recreate fine white alabaster figurine sculpture. They can be displayed as white miniature sculptures but  the surface is ready to paint on as a hobby if you so wish.

Designs in miniature can be created from many different types of egg including quail, goose, Rhea and ostrich. Trimmings can feature rhinestones, ribbons, hand made flowers, dough craft models, crystals, even clock  and music box movements.
Many craft kits are available from the egg decorating suppliers so that you can easily introduce yourself to start this creative miniature hobby. As well as decorating kits many of the leading craft guild suppliers also run instruction seminars to introduce beginners to the craft.
